The tradition stands....though members of our tree hunting party were suffering from varying levels of cold, flu, pregnancy, and sheer exhaustion...we dragged our sorry butts into the Santa Cruz mountains and found ourselves some trees!
We abandoned our plan to leave at the crack of dawn the day after Thanksgiving opting for the more reasonable hour of 1:00. This gave Bert and I time to clean up from the day before, Heidi more time to sleep in, and Hai Nhu time to try and recover from her killer bug.
I think this tree telling tale is best told through pictures. Here we are on the hunt...
Now the perfect tree has been found...and Papa gets to work!
Our sweet "little" tree...waiting for the ornaments and lights...
Rhea "helping" us with the lights...
Getting to work with the decorations...
And of course the finished product...

Oh, Christmas tree, oh, Christmas tree... and we always had Mario Lanza's record on while we were decorating... memories.
Dad has one question for Bert - What do you use to cut the tree down with? hmmm...? Well, when we used to cut down a tree, we usually had boots on because we would trudge thru at least 2 feet of snow across fields and streams, then crawl on our bellies up to the base of the most beautiful tree with a hand-held hand saw and saw thru the trunk! (and the tree was usually one of the first inspected... but mom and kids always had to inspect at least fifty trees to reinforce endorsement of the first tree being the best... while I froze!)
Your tree is gorgeous and Rhea is enchanted!
This tree was also one of the first we saw...but we had to trudge up and down the side of the hill before coming back to it. So now I know Bert can blame Grammy for my need to lay eyes on every tree before making the cut.
Well this is a hand held saw but on the end of a long stick. I do remember Dad on his belly :) In the snow...Mario Lanza is a little more fuzzy...I better get that album Stat! xxx
Oh Christmas Tree.... such bad timing with my killer cold! Paula, don't let me not get a tree from now on, OK?! (I think I hear John groaning right now...)
Such a nice image of you guys trudging through the snow, picking out the best tree... the music on while decorating. Yes, definitely never ever ever let us not get a tree from now on!
oh how i miss the presentation for thxgiving and the "fake" xmas. hugs to my baby girl!! got a 6' tree too. no trudging and no cutting...just let the guys at Lowe's wrap in net and tie on the SUV. we did all the lights, put all the decorations on...and 2 hours later half the lights went out! couldn't find the problem. off came the lights through some of the decorations but alas...while taking off the last the dead lights the tree fell over. broken ornaments and wee bit of cursing. off came all the oranments and lights...wonderful clicking noice in the trash can with the lights...back came new lights and same ornaments. as if there was extra time for all of this. having 15 people over this sunday for brunch. in a major panic and super presentation mode. wish you all could be. mucho love!
